What to look for in a barcode scanner app for reselling

A scanner app is only as useful as what it tells you after the beep. Here is a checklist to compare any of them by.

When you are standing in an aisle, a scanner app has one job: turn a barcode into a decision. We do not rank specific apps here. Apps change their features and prices, and a list would go stale. These are the questions that stay useful.

Does it read the barcodes you actually meet?

  • UPC-A and EAN-13 cover most retail products. Books may carry a different number, and some items carry only a store code.
  • Check that it copes with a curved label, a worn print or poor shop lighting, because that is where scans fail.
  • If a scan returns nothing, the number may be mistyped or the product may not be in the app's data. The check digit checker tells you which.

What does it show after the scan?

  • Does it show a price, and from where? A price with no date or source is hard to trust.
  • Does it show what the item has resold for, or only what sellers are asking? Those are different numbers.
  • Does it show the fees and shipping that come out of a sale, or leave you to work them out?

How fast and how steady is it?

Time a few scans in a place with weak signal. An app that needs a strong connection for every lookup may stall in the back of a store, which is often where the best clearance is.

What does it cost, and what does it keep?

  • Is the price a subscription or per lookup? A subscription is fine if you scan often, and wasteful if you do not.
  • How do you cancel? Look for it before you pay.
  • What does the app say it does with your scan history and your location? Read the privacy policy, not the store listing.

A simple test before you commit

Pick five items you already know the value of and scan them. Count how many it finds, and how close its figures are to what you know. That tells you more than any feature list. Treat any app's figures as an estimate from the time it checked, not a promise of what an item will sell for.

Find the source price too

SourceLoot ranks the stores it covers by total cost. Search is not live yet: join the list and you are first in.
